IBM saves $43 million, thanks to energy efficiency measures

ZDNet -- Even though it already saved close to $400 million in electricity costs between 1990 and 2010, IBM was able to squeeze out another $43 million in energy savings during 2011.

In fact, the company conserved about 378,000 megawatt hours of electricity during the year, which is about 7.4 percent of its annual consumption -- and double its goal for annual savings of 3.5 percent. From 1990 to 2011, IBM saved 5.8 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity, and it avoided about 3.7 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions (or 55 percent of its global carbon dioxide emissions for all of 1990).

IBM attributes the savings to more than 2,300 conservation efforts supported at more than 364 IBM facilities globally. Those efforts combine efficiency measures, new data center design principles,

Save on electricity by installing LEED certified energy-efficient lighting, modifications to heating and cooling equipment and utility plant alterations for further savings. Using its own technology at the highest energy consuming locations to cut energy costs. Reducing the air temperature and raising the floor temperature reduces energy by making it feel just as warm as before. There are more energy reducing techniques possible for future energy savings. Implementing energy savings now will reduce the energy bill later. Many of the same options used in industry can be used for the home also.
Less coal and oil electrical production and more possible 'cheaper' renewable energy from solar, wind, hydro, thermal, tidal and nuclear is possible.
Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. Consider using other forms of less expensive transportation to lower your cost.
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

Good for them. Everyone can do a little bit to reduce wastage, even if that's just a matter of turning off the lights when not needed, or in our case here, slowing down a little bit, or not racing up to a red light

Sounds like a plug for the Tree Huggers... It's great to save $$$ on energy, when you don't need to use it. Waste is inefficient and not a good example for others. That being said... we should be worried about our example... Carbon output is GREENSPEAK.. Get it through your heads tree huggers... God put us in charge of being good stewards of the resources put at our hands... not to worship the created.

Carbon in the air is not the problem.. it is the sin in our hearts and the pride that prevents us from doing what is right and just. Carbon dioxide is not bad... it the other stuff we do that is bad. We can't save the planet... only God can do that!

Now that the economy is bad, cost cutting is the name of the game, if these companies want to stay in business. With all the innovations and changes in data processing, IBM is a shadow of its former self.

Well, good for them. Now, what was the actual savings after adding up the investment in these green energy efforts? I would be willing to wager, if I were a wagering person, that there was a net loss, rather than a savings. It may become a savings after several more years, but this is must a manipulation of figures to get kudos from the radical left wing socialist green weenies.
