GM, Ford work on 9-speed, 10-speed transmissions: report

Reuters -- DETROIT (Reuters) - General Motors Co (GM) and Ford Motor Co (NYS:F) are jointly developing nine- and 10-speed automatic transmissions to improve the fuel economy of their models, Automotive News reported on Friday.
GM, the largest U.S. automaker, will lead the design of a nine-speed gearbox for front-wheel drive vehicles, the publication reported citing people familiar with the matter.
No. 2 U.S. automaker Ford will head the effort to develop the 10-speed transmission for rear-wheel drive vehicles such as pick-ups, SUVs and performance cars, Automotive News reported.
GM and Ford could not be immediately reached for comment.
The auto industry is scrambling to find ways to boost fuel economy by 2025, when U.S. government standards mandate that automakers show a corporate average fuel econom

How is that any better than the continuously variable transmissions?

Wow. It was tough enough to switch to a 5-speed from a 4-speed transmission.

One has to wonder how much 9 and 10 speed trasmissions will add to the initial cost and maintenance cost of a vehicle. If there is no additional inital capital cost or subsequent maintenance cost compared to what we have today in the majority of vehicles, then why not expand the speeds ranges that a transmission operates at if it indeed will improve the fuel efficiency of the vehicle.

Just as long as the ten speed is a car, SUV, or pickup... and not a bicycle.

Yes, make mine a manual :D. Paddle shift maybe?

A 15 speed Eaton/Fuller would be fun but is as large as an engine.

Good move though!

I will have to wait and see how these work out. I really don't care much for my 6 speed.

Gmsclecarp....., I don't think it's for optimum mpg, at least not yet. The top gear in the Vette allows fairly good acceleration without down shifting, going to a lower rpm would require a quick down shift if you wanted to speed up. The owners manual has a bit on not getting to 6th below, I think, 43 mph which is just below 1000 rpm. If they had a 7th gear that you didn't hit until 65 or 70, mileage would improve. Torque is not the issue here but torque and wind resistance is significant. That's why top speed on the Vette is in 5th and not 6th gear.

rollercoaster, the fallacy with believing adding a higher (lower numerical) top gear is a well engineered (for mileage) vehicle's engine will not have enough torque to pull top gear at what amounts to the new ridiculously high final drive ratio. Your TDI Volkswagen's drivetrain is engineered for max mpg with its current final drive ratio.

it's not in the horsepower it a diesel it's the torque,if you have high torque you can have low rpm and enough power to pull hills, saving fuel !!!

I like the concept. Having had the benefit of a 6 speed with double overdrive for the past decade I can see where it would benefit. No, rowing gears in a manual in heavy traffic isn't fun, but with auto these would keep rpm's to a minimum which is what I can do in my Vette, if I choose, :). In 6th I can cruise at 1500 rpm at 70 mph and get mid 30's for mileage. If on long trips I had the option to get that down around 1000 rpm it would be a big benefit.

northeast 2 thats fine i've driven a tractor trailer for 30 years and i'd like the option to a 10 speed standard in the vw tdi.i get 40 mpg around town, and if i had the option on the highway to get into 10th gear i think my mph would be around 80 mpg on highway.i have seen 54 mpg back from virginia to hartford 2 people with luggage with my 2005 vw tdi diesel.around town you would never see 10th gear, but on the highway i'd like the option to get there !!!!

I drive a sedan, not a tractor trailer. My five-speed stick is good enough. I can see six, but who wants to pulling through nine or ten gears around town?

Sounds like a good deal for those cars that are going to be driven for some distance; not effective for those cars that are just going to be driven intown.

GM garbage wwon't have longevity without another government bailout but the Ford one will probably have to cover not only the rear wheel drive but the front as well

Let's have an unlimited transmission. The Government needs to get out of the car business and leave the people to run the car business without the government getting involved with commerce.

That includes the Oil Industry.

The government - Congress - put GM out of business by pushing mandates and restricting Oil exploration.
